What to do when BitDefender detects legitimate applications

Summary:

There is a possibility that BitDefender will report a legitimate file as being infected. This is called a false positive and usually occurs when BitDefender decides that the file behaves like a malware.

Detailed description:

We strive to reduce false positive reports to a minimum however the reports are usually due to bad programming practices (e.g. applications that change the Master Boot Record, add run registry entries, change system files without the users confirmation or execute custom macros in office applications, etc.).

In order to be able to provide you specific information and correct this issue please send us the detected file(s) as described below.

NOTE: These files will be used for malware analysis only and will be treated accordingly.

1. Disable BitDefender's real-time protection and/or any other security software you might use;
2. Locate the file(s) on your drive;
3. Compress them using a common archiver of your choice;
4. Protect the archive with the password "infected" (or another of your choice);
5. Send us an email with the following:
- attach the archive (sample) to the email
- enclose the password in the message body
- mention the fact that you are sending us a false positive (preferably in the subject of the email)
7. Enable the BitDefender real-time protection and/or any other security software you might use.

NOTE: False positive reports are corrected as soon as possible once we receive the samples; for the time being you can add the file(s) to the exceptions list.
