How to prepare network stations for BitDefender Business Client automatic deployment

Summary:

One of the main features that BitDefender Client Security provides is the possibility to automatically install remote network stations, process called deployment. In some cases it is possible to encounter an error message while trying to perform such automatic deployment ("Access denied" or "Log off network").
The current document presents how network stations should be prepared for automatic deployment.

Detailed description:

Before you start: if Windows XP is installed you need to make sure that at least Service Pack 2 is installed. For Windows Vista you need to disable UAC (User Account Control).
There are four conditions to be met so that the automatic deployment will work:
  1. The simple file sharing should be disabled in order to allow administrative accounts to remote in. In order to check this condition please go to Control Panel and double click on Folder Options. Once the Folder Options window is open go to the View tab and search for Use simple file sharing (for Windows Vista please look for "Use sharing wizard"); make sure to disable it;
  2. Make sure that the Server service is started and the Printer Sharing protocol enabled;
  3. Firewalls at the station level should either be disabled or configured in such manner to allow File and Printer Sharing. In order to disable Windows Firewall you need to go to Control Panel, double click on Windows Firewall and set it to Off. Alternatively you can go to the Exceptions tab and make sure that File and printer sharing is enabled. In a domain environment make sure there is no group or domain policy that enforces the windows firewall to an enabled state.
  4. Use password-enabled user accounts. For security reasons, Windows denies remote access to user accounts without password.
In order to check that the network stations are correctly configured please try the following:
  1. Ping the respective network station;
  2. Try to log in on the administrative share \\computer_name\admin$;
  3. For Windows Vista, the application runs elevated.
