Troubleshooting BitDefender Online Scanner

Issue:

Describes the minimal requirements and the necessary Internet Explorer configuration for running the BitDefender Online Scanner.

Solution:

BitDefender Online Scanner is a fully functional antivirus product, featuring all required elements for antivirus scanning and cleaning. For troubleshooting it follow the steps:

  1. Verify the compliance with the minimal requirements.

Web Browser: Internet Explorer 6 or newer

  2. Check the current user rights.

Installing the BitDefender Online Scanner on Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Server 2003, requires administrative rights. Check with your network administrator your user account status. In Windows Vista, if UAC (User Account Control) is enabled, the browser needs to be started with administrative privileges. Please click here to see more details about Windows Vista.

  3. Set Internet Explorer's security level to Medium-High or less.

The ActiveX controls needed for the BitDefender Online Scanner are blocked if the Internet Explorer security level is set to High or a custom level based on it. The Medium security level allows safe browsing while maintaining most functionalities. To set the security level:

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Select Tools, then Internet Options.
    3. Click Security and select the Internet Web content zone.
    4. Click Default Level.

Another way to solve this issue would be by moving the site address Online Scanner needs to work to other security zone, like Trusted Sites, for example. The Trusted sites zone has more relaxed security settings than the Internet Zone.

To do this, follow the steps:
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Select Tools, then Internet Options.
    3. Click Security and select the Trusted Sites zone.
    4. Press the add sites button.
    5. In the text field complete the following sites and press the "Add" button for each:
      http://*.bitdefender.com
      http://a248.e.akamai.net
      http://ssl-hints.netflame.cc

  4. Install ActiveX Control.

On default browser settings for Internet Zone, Internet Explorer will block the installation of BitDefender's scanning ActiveX control and will present the Information bar.
To install Online Scanner ActiveX control please follow steps:

    1. Click the Information Bar.
    2. Select Install ActiveX Control....
    3. Click Yes.
  5. Verify and enable the Scan Online Control.

On Windows XP with Service Pack 2 it is possible to manage what add-ons will be used in Internet Explorer.

    1. In Internet Explorer, select Tools.
    2. Click Manage Add-ons....
    3. Show Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer.
    4. Select BDSCANONLINE Control.
    5. In the Settings, check Enable.
